When Microsoft released Windows 10, people at the company explained that it would be the last version of Windows. Now, a leaked build of Windows 11 seemingly confirms that Windows 10 is not the last version of Windows. What gives? Since we're dealing with a leaked version of Windows 11, there aren't any official comments from Microsoft on the topic. That being said, we can speculate as to the shift in strategy.
The most likely reason is, to put it bluntly, things change. Microsoft was going to do one thing and then decided to do another thing. Exactly, it's basically a myth.
Currently, Win10 is the latest. Once Win11 arrives then Win10 will be the last still last but not final. Marketing may have pushed Win10 as the final version of Windows, but marketing is always subject change.
Thing is, pushing "10" as the last ever is rather naive, like saying you'll never need more than 64KB of memory.
To be fair, companies are allowed to change their minds about things. Markets change and companies need to adapt to that, it shouldn't really be seen as a negative. I don't know why that's so hard for people to accept. A company that refuses to ever change their mind on anything is a company doomed for failure. The "last" version of Windows notion was from a senior official who was later encouraged to leave because the boss wanted to move in a different direction.
No one else has ever said Windows 10 was the last version of the OS. Speaking just of the start screen, live tiles were innovative when they first appeared, but the world has moved on. But from what I read, if you still want them on your desktop, you can easily revert to the Windows 10 style. Hm, so now we are missing windows 9. I am not sure how i feel about this.
